Great Blue Heron
On 08/24/2025 01:40 pm by Janet Devadoss-Yoder | Website | Carmel, Indiana, USA
Poised at the water's edge, the Great Blue Heron is a majestic sight to behold. This stately heron with its subtle blue-gray plumage often stands motionless as it scans for prey or wades belly deep with long, deliberate strides. They may move slowly, but Great Blue Herons can strike like lightning to grab a fish or other prey.
The Great Blue Heron is the largest of the North American herons characterized by long legs, a sinuous neck, and a thick, dagger-like bill. They also forage in meadows, farmland and other open fields.
