While looking for hummingbirds I instead came across this clearwing hummingbird moth (Hemaris thysbe). This variety has a green, furry back and burgundy bands on its tail section. They move so quickly they are a challenge to photograph; I only managed a photo of this guy because it stopped for a split second to feed at this plant's tubular flowers, and then disappeared.
Canon T2i DSLR, Tamron 200-400mm lens at 390mm, f/8, 1/640th second, ISO 1250.
