In the fantasy realm of Game of Thrones, Queen Daenerys Targaryen conquered the world of Westeros alongside her legendary dragons – Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion. Now, imagine a celestial counterpart: a dragon soaring through the depths of the Milky Way.
This is no myth. Astronomers know it as the Flying Dragon Nebula – an elusive, faint hydrogen-emission nebula located near the constellation Cygnus. It is part of a vast complex that includes LBN 347 and Sh2-113, its intricate structure resembling the wings and body of a mythical dragon .
The nebula’s formation is believed to be shaped by fierce stellar winds from massive, hot O-type and B-type stars, interacting with interstellar magnetic fields to sculpt its wispy, dragon-like silhouette. Yet, the exact origins remain a mystery. Although its appearance suggests a supernova remnant, astronomers have found no confirmed evidence of such an explosion in this region.
What makes it even more remarkable is its rarity in astrophotography. Its light is far too faint to be visible , it cost me more than 20 hours imaging with Ha narrowband filter to reveal its hidden details
