Turkey Vulture aglow in the light of the setting sun. And he looks like he's holding a staff in the photo, part of the branch he is perched on.
Turkey vultures are a familiar sight this time of year, having arrived in early spring (and leaving in autumn). They play an important role in the ecosystem by scavenging and cleaning up carrion. Occasionally they eat plant matter such as rotten fruit also when animal carcasses are scarce. All in all their diet helps to clean the environment of decaying matter, making them essential to the ecosystem.
