Western kingbird in hover mode
On 07/12/2025 01:25 pm by Randy Strauss | "The Woods" Park, Nebraska
I was walking back to my truck after an unproductive birding session when I noticed this western kingbird perched on the top of a nearby tree. It then hopped slightly above the tree top where there was just enough of a breeze so that by facing into the breeze and flapping its wings from time to time, it could hover in place for as long as it pleased. After twenty seconds, it would drop back down to the top of the tree, rest for a moment and then repeat the process, allowing me to take photo after photo. Here are just a few. My vintage camera's shutter speed was maxed out at 1/8,000th of a second to freeze the motion of the bird's wings. A pity it was a hazy afternoon with the sun almost directly overhead and to my left; I can just imagine how these would have looked with better lighting.
