Traces of a Supernova

The Cygnus Loop is a large, faint supernova remnant located in the constellation Cygnus, about 1,500 light-years from Earth. Spanning over 3 degrees of the sky—about six full moons wide—it’s the result of a massive star that exploded roughly 10,000 to 20,000 years ago. The expanding shockwaves from the explosion interact with interstellar gas, creating a complex, glowing structure of filaments and clouds.
The Cygnus Loop contains several notable deep space objects:
Veil Nebula (NGC 6960, 6979, 6992, 6995): A prominent and visually striking portion of the loop, known for its wispy, colorful filaments.
Pickering’s Triangle: A delicate, tangled structure located between the eastern and western Veil Nebula segments.
Witch’s Broom Nebula (NGC 6960): The western edge of the Veil, seen near the star 52 Cygni.
The Cygnus Loop is a favorite among astrophotographers and amateur astronomers due to its beauty and expansive detail.
