The Elusive Herd of Giant Horses

I took this photo with drone, while flying over an expansive, remote area of forest service land that’s basically closed to foot traffic and visitors of any kind. Except for a herd of eight horses plus four wild burros (donkeys), that freely roam the about 700 acres of protected land, after they were turned loose more than 8 years ago. It is difficult to even get just a brief glimpse of the wild bunch from an adjacent rough dirt road. But I got lucky: Flying my drone (stealthy) very high up at 385 feet to avoid spooking the animals, I was able to find them on an open field near the center of of the forest land. And at first glance they looked like a very strange group of creatures: enormously large, all of them black and moving slowly across the open space like giant, disproportioned and odd shapes. Until I looked a little bit closer at my drone monitor and realized that I was actually seeing the shadows of the animal, which were hugely exaggerated by the still fairly low, rising sun.
