Shopping for Sunday brunch
On 07/20/2025 10:32 am by Randy Strauss | Prairie Queen Lake, Nebraska
Oppressive heat, humidity and massive numbers of biting insects have reduced local photo opportunities. Fortunately this female belted kingfisher made my day, landing very close by in a tree overhanging the lake, intent of finding a fish for its Sunday brunch. I photographed it through a small opening in the tree's canopy that screened me from its view; otherwise the kingfisher would have likely not tolerated me being so close. Its large, dagger-like bill enhances its fishing success rate. And yes, it found plenty of fish.
