Cocoon Nebula

On 07/20/2025 12:00 am by Marcy Curran | Cheyenne, Wyoming

The Cocoon Nebula, also known as IC 5146, is a reflection and emission nebula located about 4,000 light-years away in the constellation Cygnus. Spanning roughly 15 light-years across, it is a stellar nursery where new stars are being born. The nebula glows due to a young, hot star at its center, which energizes the surrounding gas and illuminates the dusty clouds. Dark lanes of interstellar dust trail off from the nebula, connecting it to a long molecular cloud complex.
