Common Murres, the most abundant seabirds breeding in Oregon, are easily recognized by their black and white breeding plumage and their upright stance. They resemble small penguins. Here are hundreds of them side by side with their young on top and along the sides of the rocky cliffs. There are a few cormorants and seagulls among them. The murres give very distinct low-pitched, guttural calls and a longer, braying aaaaarrrr, ARR-ahh.
Female murres leave their chicks with the males before they fledge, and the males guide the young birds to the sea.
The boats sailing on the ocean seen on upper right carry whale watching tourists and locals.
