Red Elderberries

On 07/11/2025 11:35 am by Cecille Kennedy | Lincoln City, Oregon

Pacific Red Elderberry laden with ripe berries. The tall shrubs grow on roadsides and just about any place that they are left to thrive in the Northwest. Elderberry shrubs provide food, cover, and nesting provisions for many wildlife species. Earlier in the spring their flowers provided nectar and pollen for butterflies, bees, hummingbirds and other pollinators. Now their fully ripe fruits (berries) are eaten by many mammals and birds. Besides having high wildlife value, humans have used the berries to make dye or ink, for food (ripe and cooked) and medicine.
