Sleeping Beauty
On 07/02/2025 02:45 pm by Kalyanii Kennedy | Astoria, WA, USA
Wood sorrel seen by a creek. Beautiful leaves and can be mistaken for clover (which is what I thought this was at first!). Wood sorrel grows in the shade and is edible in smaller quantities, as it contains oxalic acid. I haven’t tried it yet but it reportedly has a tart, lemony flavor and is also high in Vitamin C. It is sometimes used in teas and Native Americans used it for medicinal purposes like treating colds and fevers. In folklore, it is associated with luck, protection from evil, and love. Its nickname is Sleeping Beauty since it can close its leaves and flowers at night (nyctinasty) or due to weather.
