Evening Primrose

On 07/05/2025 09:01 am by Cecille Kennedy | Depoe Bay, Oregon

These are evening primrose flowers basking in the morning sun. The blossoms close at mid-day and open at dusk, hence the name "evening primrose."
Evening primrose was an important source of food (especially the roots) and medicine for Native Americans but is now often grown for its omega-6 containing seeds. A forager (backyard.forager.com) attests that the flowers and the leaves are edible, but the tastiest are the roots cooked just like potatoes. Evening primrose roots are best harvested in fall of their first year or early spring of their second year, before the tall stem begins to grow.
