Insects beware!
On 06/28/2025 11:54 am by Randy Strauss | Prairie Queen Lake, Nebraska
Red-headed woodpeckers are able to catch insects while both the woodpecker and insect are flying. This woodpecker was no exception; I watched it for 30 minutes while it sortied again and again and never failed to catch an insect, which it sometimes ate, and sometimes took back to its nest. Cloud-free, overhead sunshine allowed me to use an extremely fast shutter speed and minimal aperture to get this photo. The woodpecker maneuvered so quickly it was a challenge to capture its movements.
