Mars closing in on Regulus

On 06/15/2025 10:20 pm by Marcy Curran | Website | Cheyenne, Wyoming

We’ve been experiencing a lot of cloudy skies lately, but last night, we had partly cloudy skies that allowed this area of the sky to shine through. This image was cropped from a full-sky dome image captured using our allsky camera. Mars (marked with an arrow) is positioned directly above the star Regulus in Leo the Lion, adding another point of light to the Sickle of Leo. This image was taken just one day before Mars passes by, approximately 0.8 degrees from Regulus. Additionally, you can observe the Big Dipper, Boötes, and Corona Borealis. For a more detailed view of Mars and Regulus, consider using binoculars; you’ll notice that Mars appears red!
