In Living Color

It is that wonderful time of year when dozens and dozens of super brightly colored fuzzballs are zipping around our alpine meadows, stopping only briefly at the red Indian Paintbrush and the few other flowers that are starting to bloom now. Hummingbirds! Highly territorial, the tiny “Broadtail Hummingbird” in this photo was sitting on a dead branch of an aspen tree, overlooking a part of the meadow, from where he is pretty aggressively defending his turf by divebombing (and reaching speeds of more than 60mph /100 kmh!!) any other hummingbird trying to “trespass”. His iridescent- purplish-red neck and the metallic-green feathers covering his body were literally glowing in the midday sunlight like an explosion of living colors. Enjoy!
