Aptly named...

While observing great blue herons raising their young I noticed this red-headed woodpecker hunting for insects, and watched it return to its home in a hollowed out portion of a dead tree. Adult males and females appear alike with the distinctive red-head, and they are quite tolerant of my presence. They store food in crevices of trees and under bark although few winter over in Nebraska, and are in decline here in part due to habitat destruction. This small park is next to farmland currently being turned into a housing subdivision.
