While watching the bald eagle eaglets this morning I realized that I hadn't checked on the great blue herons in quite a while. Was delighted to see they now have youngsters; in this nest, two chicks. The heron on the right had patiently waited for its mate to arrive and take over watching the chicks. The switch couldn't come quickly enough for the heron on the right; it stretched its neck out, rubbed the bill of its mate with its own bill and took off flying, perhaps to fish and return with lunch. Look closely at the top of the nest and you'll see one of the youngsters.
