Pacific Forktail Damselfly
On 05/16/2025 12:39 pm by Cecille Kennedy | Devils Lake Lincoln City, Oregon
This is a Pacific Forktail damselfly gracefully curled before flying off, he is one of many present on grass and vegetation by the lakeshore. They are tiny, beautiful, and I enjoyed watching them fly and often land stretched flat and motionless, maybe pretending to be dead.
The adult damselflies contribute to pest control, for instance they consume mosquitoes. The nymphs or larvae that live in the water eat mosquito larvae. The damselfly also serves as food to larger animals.
Damselflies are sensitive to pollution and habitat degradation, so their presence (or absence) can be a good indicator of ecosystem health.
