Two crescents: the moon & Venus 23rd April and earlier

On 04/23/2025 05:50 am by Tom Tan | Melbourne, Australia

I am fascinated by the crescent moon, especially with earthshine and the crescent Venus and I hope others are too.

Tomorrow morning the two will be quite close together but the weather forecast here says cloudy.
However, they won't fit into one frame and soon the Venus crescent will be gone.

So I decided to make this photo up from two earlier photos:

1. a Venus crescent from yesterday. It has no colour fringing! I did not edit the JPG.
I had picked it from many exposure brackets.
2. a crescent moon with earthshine from some time earlier.
The crescent was not thin enough to bring out the earthshine.

The two crescents were facing the same way. I had moved the Venus crescent
to be diagonally opposite to the crescent moon.

It is impossible to get them together with one shot anyway because the earthshine requires a long exposure while the Venus crescent requires a fast exposure.

A composite of two layers: a crescent moon with earthshine and a crescent Venus.
The Venus image was zoomed in and cropped. See it at the upper right corner.
Blackpoint was set in the crescent moon image to darken the background.
Curves was used in the composite image to brighten the earthshine.
