Echoes of Time – The ruins of Dholavira rest beneath Milkyway

This image was captured during our Milkyway Saga workshop, set in the ancient land of Kutch—once home to the great Harappan civilization. To reach our shooting spot, we descended 900 meters in pitch darkness, headlamps at full power, with insects buzzing around and heavy gear on our backs. The night was calm and silent as we waited for the Milky Way to rise.
To pass the time, we decided to cook Maggi on a camper stove. The wind kept exhausting the flame, making it a struggle. As the aroma filled the air, a small rat appeared, refusing to leave no matter how often we shooed it away. Eventually, we managed to cook our meal, along with kesar elaichi tea—an unforgettable experience in the wild.
Just as we finished eating, the Milky Way emerged behind a small hillock, glowing brilliantly. The calmness around gave us a glimpse of the past—how this land must have looked in the Harappan era, devoid of artificial lights and under pristine, pitch-dark skies. Even today, the sky remained untouched, a true Bortle 2 haven, where the cosmos revealed its full splendor. We shot with all our energy, capturing the beauty of the night. In the final image, hidden wonders of the universe appeared—the Rho Ophiuchi Cloud, the Blue Horsehead Nebula, and delicate pink nebulae near the galactic core—revealing details unseen by the naked eye.
Soon, twilight took over, birds began to chirp, and it was time to head back. Tired but exhilarated, we returned to our guesthouse, carrying not just our gear, but the memory of a perfect night—where history and the cosmos merged into a single breathtaking experience.
