Double Rainbow Over Leiria

On 04/02/2025 06:02 pm by Rui Santos | Website | Leiria, Portugal

It was the first time in my life seeing it form and vanish from start to finish.
I had a feeling it was going to happen just by looking at the weather, so right after work, I rushed to the highest, clearest vantage point nearby. As I got there, the conditions suddenly began to align.

Explanation:
A double rainbow occurs when sunlight is both reflected and refracted twice inside raindrops, creating two concentric arcs of color in the sky.
In the primary rainbow light enters the raindrop, reflects once inside, and exits. In the secondary rainbow light reflects twice inside the raindrop before exiting. Because of that second reflection, the colors are reversed.
Double rainbows are not super rare, but they’re not everyday either - you usually need the right mix of sunlight at a low angle (early morning or late afternoon) and moisture in the air.
