Welcome Spring!

On 03/19/2025 06:05 pm by Kamala Venkatesh | Website | San Diego, California, USA

Are we ready for the Equinox?

I shot this last night, but the actual equinox was at 2:02 a.m. Pacific Standard time. Spring is here! The powerful sun lit up the road several miles away and also caused a sun-bow in the sky. An added bonus!

The equinox happens twice a year - in March and in September. Wherever you are on the planet, the equinox occurs at the same moment.

Have you ever wondered why the direction of sunset changes throughout the year? We usually speak of the sun setting in the west, but technically it only sets due west at the spring and autumn equinoxes. For the rest of the year, the direction of sunset pivots about this westerly point, moving northerly in winter, and towards the south in summer. (In the northern hemisphere-that’s us, the sunset tends more northerly in summer and more southerly in winter.)
