Volcanic Rocks leading to El Pilón
On 02/25/2025 06:06 pm by Kamala Venkatesh | Website | Loreto, Baja, Mexico
This is sunset over the peak known as the El Pilón de Lolita, east of Loreto, a small town in Baja California Sur, Mexico. From this point, one can easily see the Sea of Cortez on east side. The rocks looked like they were left over from a not-so-past volcanic activity on the Baja Peninsula. "The characteristic volcanic rock of Baja California are magnesium-rich basaltic andesite and andesite which are known as bajaite. The Sierra de San Borja, also known as Sierra La Libertad is a mountain range on the Baja California Peninsula of Mexico. It is one of the Peninsular Ranges which form the backbone of Baja California. The Sierra de San Borja is located between 28° North latitude (the border of the states of Baja California and Baja California Sur.) While San Borja lavas are calc-alkaline, there is a noticeable difference between volcanites erupted at San Borja over 11 years ago and those erupted about 4 million years ago."
