Moondial of Eclipse

On 03/14/2025 03:00 am by Robert Watcher | Website | Seaforth, Ontario

Although the sky was socked in with cloud and haze an hour after moonrise, I got prepared with gear and timing of the phases that I wanted to capture, and went to sleep with my alarm set for 12:00 am just in case. It turned out that all I needed to do was step out onto my NW facing porch to view the event straight overhead. The photo of each the 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 phases was 20 minutes apart, as well as capturing the thin sliver on each end. Roughly 1:00 - 2:30 am. I went out at 3:00 to get the red moon at it peak. Then sat outside in the -5C weather from 3:30 - 5:00 am for the final sequence. It turned out to be an exception night to capture the complete eclipse.

I used Affinity Photo to composite the photos of sequences on layers, using a shot that I took of the same black sky with nothing in it, so that the masked moons on each layer, would blend easily with the background. I decided to use the concept of a returning circle to the bright full moon.
