During a well-established rainy season, periods of almost continuous overcast with thundery rain alternate with short late afternoon clearances of cloud. These allow the setting sun to briefly appear before it disappears below and continues to shine from beyond the horizon to project brightly coloured light onto the local remnants of various cloud formations. This results in beautiful post-sunset displays of the type shown in this post. Prescience and alacrity are required to capture the highlights of the scenes which develop all around the observer and last for less than 20 minutes before darkness approaches.
