At a distance a Great White Egret standing tall and pretty on a dead tree branch. The growing feathers on his sides and especially noticeable on his tail are called aigrettes that is breeding plumage. In our area at the Oregon coast the egret breeding season is around April to June. Both female and male egrets grow breeding plumage. Male great egrets use their aigrettes in courtship displays to attract the female.
Aigrettes are the long, delicate plumes that grow from the back of a great egret during breeding season. The word "aigrette" comes from the French language and is the source of the great egret's common name.
