Moon Illusion
On 01/18/2025 11:00 pm by Cecille Kennedy | Depoe Bay, Oregon
The waning gibbous moon rising. It is 5 days after the full wolf moon.
For some reason, the brain misinterprets the Moon as being larger when it is nearer to the horizon than when it is high in the sky. This is referred to as the moon illusion.
According to NASA sky watchers have known this for thousands of years: moons hanging low in the sky look unnaturally big. Cameras don't see it, but our eyes do. It's a real illusion.
