This is a Common Goldeneye. An uncommon bird to our area but sometimes migrate here during the winter months. This is an adult female and she was splashing around in the water. Ducks splash because they like it and it is part of their method of hygiene. They have a gland at the base of their tails called a preen gland. The preen gland which is activated by water releases an oil that coats the bird’s feathers and makes them waterproof.
