Geese, geese and more geese
On 12/21/2024 10:45 am by Randy Strauss | Portal Lake, Nebraska
Two days ago I visited Walnut Creek Lake and saw remarkable numbers of geese. This morning (14F plus a breeze that pushed the wind chill well below 0F) I drove to Portal Lake, five miles from Walnut Creek and saw still more geese. In Nebraska, some migrate, some stay here throughout the winter. They seem quite content to stand on the ice for extended periods or swim in the near freezing open water. Our corn, soybean and wheat harvest ended months ago, and today's combines leaves very little loose grain on the ground, so there is not much left in the fields for them. What they eat this time of year to generate heat and survive these conditions is a mystery to me.
