Rainbow on the Horizon at Noon
On 12/20/2024 12:17 pm by Meiying Lee | Website | Taipei, Taiwan
Taipei is located at 25 degrees North latitude, and at noon, the sun is usually high in the sky, making it rare to see a rainbow at this time. Tomorrow (December 21st) is the Winter Solstice, when the sun is at its southernmost point, so at noon, the sun will be lower in the sky. If you're standing at a higher elevation, there is a chance to see a rainbow near the horizon. Today, Taipei had its usual light drizzle, but at noon, the sun suddenly appeared. From the rooftop of a building in the southern outskirts of Taipei, looking north, I saw this rare, low-altitude rainbow! Taipei is a basin. In the photo, you can see the city surrounded by hills and Taipei's landmark 101 building. The 101 building is directly to the north of the photographer. The photo was taken at 12:17 PM, with the sun at an azimuth of 188 degrees and an elevation angle of 41.1 degrees. The rainbow is almost at the horizon to the north. It was truly exciting to be at a high enough location (110 meters above sea level) at such a special time to witness this ultra-low rainbow!
