Ghost Trees of Quake Lake
On 12/13/2024 01:09 pm by Judy Boyle | Cameron, Montana, USA
August 17, 1958 was the date of a devastating earthquake outside of YNP that caused a massive landslide that blocked the Madison River, creating Quake Lake. The quake was a 7.5 magnitude earthquake which is the second largest earthquake in the lower 48 states and in the 20th century. It is known as the Hebgen Lake Earthquake. Twenty-eight people lost their lives. The lake buried the forest along the river, and the remains of the forest's trees are still in the lake. Their ice indicates the winter ahead.
