Hooded Mergansers

Two pairs of hooded mergansers are swimming on the narrow part of the lake.

Both males and females have striking crests that they can raise high or flatten. The crests look like hoods. This is their breeding season thus the males have eclipse plumage of brown, black and white, their eyes are bright yellow and their bill is black. The females have cinnamon reddish-brown crests and brown eyes. The upper bill is black-edged with orange and the lower bill is yellow.
