The Andromeda Galaxy M31 is a large barred spiral galaxy about 2.5 million light-years from Earth. It is located in the constellation Andromeda, from which it takes its name. It is the large galaxy closest to the Milky Way and is among the most distant objects visible to the unaided eye from a dark sky without light pollution.
