In the afternoon on Sunday 17th November, a classic early rainy season dry thunderstorm developed in the direction of Hospital Hill and Chikanga Township between 5 and 5.30 pm which produced a disproportionate amount of spectacular cloud-to-ground lightning strikes from fairly innocuous looking clouds. A number of these were captured on video taken using two compact cameras - one hand held and the other tripod mounted - from which selected frames were extracted to produce the accompanying selection of best still images. From these it can be seen that no high ground is safe and in particular the summit of Hospital Hill above which one particularly powerful strike appeared to open a brief ‘Portal to Heaven’ which would have claimed the life of anyone unfortunate enough to have been standing in the vicinity!
