The Shark nebula
On 10/06/2024 10:00 pm by Steven Bellavia | Website | Mattituck and Southold, NY
The brighter portion of the shark (though still very faint) is LBN (Lynds' Bright Nebula) 535, and the dark head (or the eye) of the shark is LDN (Lynds' Dark Nebula) 1235. The two blue-white areas are reflection nebulae vdB 149 and vdB 150.
Together, this region is known as the Shark nebula, or the Dark Shark Nebula, at about 1,000 light years distant.
Also in the image, but not remotely close to the shark, at approximately 100 million light years away, are several galaxies. PGC 67347 (bottom right) is 129.5 MLY and PGC 67671 (upper right to the bright center star, 16 Cep) is 80.6 MLY away.
