A lunar halo in Milan

On the evening of November 12, 2024 at 11pm the Moon appeared through the haze creating a beautiful halo.
This is an optical phenomenon, halos are formed when there are ice crystals in the atmosphere. The type of halo depends precisely on the shapes of the crystals, which are mostly tiny hexagons. The lunar halo arises when the moon's light reflects on the ice crystals that make up cirrus clouds, i.e. white clouds found in the troposphere, between 5 and 10 kilometers high. The clouds contain millions of ice crystals which are as many species of very small lenses. The light enters and filters through one of the faces of the crystals and exits from another.
