Woodland Polar Sundial, Solar Noon, 9/22/2024 Equinox

A polar sundial is tilted at the same angle as the latitude of the dial. On the Equinoxes, the shadow of the gnomon tracks in a straight line horizontally in the center of the dial from west to east. At solar noon, 12:59:44 PM PDT today, the gnomon is pointing directly to the sun and casts no shadow. This is analogous to a perpendicular pole on the equator, which casts no shadow at solar noon on the Equinoxes. Time lapse videos of the movement of the gnomon shadow, compressed into 50 seconds, of the March, 2024 Equinox and the September, 2023 Equinox can be viewed at woodlandpolarsundial.com.
