Trumpeter Swan

Photographing wildlife in Alaska this one is special, a Trumpeter Swan. These are the largest birds in North America. Audubon famously had to contort the bird to fit the page of his life-sized double elephant folio print, one of his most difficult to fit the format, I saw a pair migrating south in the early morning, they stopped at Potter's Marsh just in front of me for a short rest stop before continuing on their journey. These birds were nearly extinct in the 1930s, a remnant population was discovered in Alaska and they have been gradually restored in a success story for all to see. This is one of a mated pair, they were were constantly engaged in "conversation" as if discussing route and stops. I had an amazing few minutes and then they moved on.
