Fogbow over Frenchman Bay - Bar Harbor - Maine

On 08/26/2024 05:04 pm by Patricia Evans| Frenchman Bay - Bar Harbor - Mount Desert Island - Maine

On vacation this week at the Bar Harbor Inn on Mount Desert Island. Our room faces Frenchman Bay. This is the view from our porch. All day, the fog was rolling in and out of the harbor. The view here is normally of two Porcupine Islands and the shoreline on the far side of the harbor. But at this time, all I could see was a solid wall of thick fog. I took a few photos with my iPhone to compare to the view when it's clear, and was surprised to see what looked like a white rainbow! At first, I thought it was a lens distortion, but I took two more photos and they all showed this "ghost" rainbow image! I couldn't see it with my eyes but my iPhone somehow managed to capture it.

I remembered taking photos of the Aurora Borealis in May with my iPhone and it revealed distinct green and red streaks in the sky that I could not see with my naked eyes. So, I wondered if my iPhone was picking up yet another weather phenomenon that my eyes could not see?

After doing some research to find out if "fogbows" really do exist, I discovered that although rare, they DO!

Had to share this photo with you to see if you agree.
