Double rainbow under pink skies at sunset
On 08/17/2024 06:47 pm by Armando Caussade | Website | San Juan, Puerto Rico
This double rainbow was seen very late in the afternoon under light rain, and the image was obtained while looking due east, exactly at sunset when the sun was starting to dip below the western horizon. Only the primary rainbow was seen visually, but upon close inspection of the resulting panorama (particularly in the lower right of the photo) parts of a faint secondary rainbow were spotted. Like all secondary rainbows, this one lies about 10 degrees outside of the primary, with the order of colors inverted. The panorama also displays a noticeable pink hue below the primary rainbow that was caused by a concentration of rain in that area; this was plainly visible to the eye and quite attractive.

Panorama stitching of three separate photo shots by Hugin, and post-processing of the final panorama by GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP), all on GNU/Linux. (1) rotation by one degree; (2) mild levels adjustment to improve contrast; (3) slight increase in color saturation; (4) cropping of the top and bottom parts of the image; (5) scaling from the original at 9,538 x 5,517 to 6,000 x 3,000.
