Trying to photograph a dragonfly or damselfly in flight is challenging. Got lucky with this two for one deal: a male Eastern Amberwing dragonfly just touching down on a twig protruding from a shallow pool, and a Bluet damselfly coming in for a landing a split second behind it. A shutter speed of 1/1000th of a second was just fast enough to freeze the damselfly's wings in flight. Both insects average about an inch long. After landing, a dragonfly keeps its wings extended; a damselfly folds them along the length of its body.
