Lunch is served

I had just finished a late lunch when I noticed this guy was about to enjoy his. Bluet damselflies are about an inch long so you can imagine how small the unfortunate gnat was. Dragonflies and damselflies are very proficient hunters, with a capture success rate of around 95%. As they fly around they scoop up their prey in a basket they form with their legs, sometimes eating on the run, and more commonly enjoying their meal while perched on a plant.

Canon SL2 DSLR, Canon 18-55mm lens (at 55mm) with multiple extensions totaling 35mm to achieve desired magnification while outdoors. 1/160th second, ISO 400, f/4. Wildfire smoke made the air hazy which softened the direct sunlight illuminating the damselfly.
