On an ideal day for photographing dragonflies (sunny, hot, a light breeze) I came across a few dozen grasshoppers occupying the same shoreline vegetation as the dragonflies and damselflies. These guys were much less active, content to stay put until I got a little too close with my camera. Since they, like dragonflies have been around since the days of dinosaurs, I can understand why closeup they look almost other-worldly. Those foreleg tarsal claws look like they mean business.
