White-tailed Kite

On 07/13/2024 05:05 pm by Lynzie Flynn| Irvine, CA, USA

I was out specifically to find and capture images of this bird today. This is a juvenile White-tailed Kite. The coloring across the breast is the indication the bird is a juvenile. Adults would be pure white. This bird is 3 siblings. They are nearing the age that they will be going off on their own. They usually start flying about 35 days after hatching and then remain dependent on their parents for about a month longer.
The kite uses several hunting strategies. It may fly slow and low, often 25-65 feet off the ground, keeping an eye out for something to eat. It also searches for prey by soaring, flapping, or hovering flight. When a tasty morsel is spotted, it drops down with its wings up and feet dangling to seize prey.
