The Western Painted Turtle is the only turtle native to Alberta, Canada. The edge of the shell and the lower shell sport a colorful red to yellow/orange pattern with black. Their life span can be over 50 years. Fun fact: The sex of the turtle is determined by the nest temperature during incubation. Above 29 degrees Celsius produces females, and below 27 degrees produces males—28 degrees will yield both males and females. These turtles found an ideal basking place on a beaver lodge.
