Rho Ophiuchi Cloud Complex

On 05/30/2024 12:30 am by Scott Johnstone| Delaware, Ontario

This is my version of the Rho Ophiuchi Cloud Complex spanning between the constellations Ophiuchus and Scorpius. It consists of a variety of different nebulae including dark, reflection and emission nebulae. The picture also contains at least 2 globular star clusters, M4 and NGC6144.
I have been eager to photograph this area for quite some time, ever since I came across a picture of it displayed at the Hume Cronyn Memorial Observatory at Western University in London, Ont.
Capturing this subject from my location poses a challenge due to its limited altitude in the southern sky and the short timeframe it is visible each year. It required favorable conditions over several nights, encompassing weather and lunar phase, to achieve optimal shooting conditions..

Telescope: William Optics Zenithstar 61ii with Flat61R reducer
Camera: Canon 600D modified DSLR
Mount: Sky Watcher HEQ5-p
Accessories: ASIair Plus, EAF

Acquisition: consists of 144 x 180 seconds light frames for a total of 7h 12'

This is a 2 panel mosaic taken over 3 nights.
