Airglow complimenting the Milky Way
On 06/06/2024 01:30 am by Randy Strauss| Eastern rural Nebraska, away from city lights
While photographing the Milky Way on what I thought would be a clear night, thin clouds moved in. I expected the frames to be spoiled, but during processing they revealed what may be chemical fluorescence from oxygen, nitrogen and hydroxyl molecules emitting light from the energy they'd absorbed during the brilliantly sunny and hot day we'd had. It was still warm overnight with average transparency but below average seeing. Twenty-five, 20 second long exposures, ISO 6400, F/2.8. It was a late night, but worth it.
