Sword-billed Hummingbird

On 04/18/2024 07:34 am by Lynzie Flynn| Ecuador

I was in Ecuador on a bird photography trip. My guide took me to a location that was filled with hummingbirds each with dazzling colors and flitting from flower to flower. One of the largest hummingbirds is the Sword-billed Hummingbird with a bill that reaches up to 4". It's bill allows it to feed on long tubular flowers that other birds are unable to feed from as well as smaller flowers such as in this photo. Smaller billed hummingbirds would have their entire bill inside the flower whereas the Sword-billed sips the nectar from a distance.
