Spectacular early and Late Volcanic Sunset.

On 05/24/2024 06:06 pm by Peter Lowenstein| Mutare, Zimbabwe

On Friday 25th May, nearly two and a half years after the gigantic eruption of the Hunga-Tonga Volcano in the South Pacific on 15th January 2022, stratospheric aerosols are amazingly still producing these colorful Southern Hemisphere volcanic sunset displays in Mutare which appear between 30 minutes to one hour after sundown. On Friday, atmospheric conditions were perfect with excellent visibility and a very thin layer of striated high atmospheric cloud to accentuate reflections of light from the stratosphere. This secures the Hunga-Tonga eruption a place in the category of the all-time great historic explosive events along with Tambora ( 1815) and Krakatoa ( 1883) which also produced colourful sunsets which were visible globally for more than a year.
